It’s that time again!! Time for the “2017 Holiday Gifts that Engineers Actually Want” list! From young to old, video game to product design, we’ve kept track of our favorite products of the year and have served them up for you to look like a holiday hero!
You show me an engineer that doesn’t like LEGO bricks, and I’ll show you an engineer that that should have his degree taken away! Sure, this is probably the most expensive 32GB flash drive that you can find, but how cool does it look!? Plus, you can attach your favorite “I love AutoCAD” LEGO figure to it. Sold.
PancakeBot PNKB01BK 3D Food Printer
Does the engineer in your life love breakfast? You won’t find a better fit than the PancakeBot printer! Think of a 3D printer, making all the shapes you can imagine, but in pancake form! And in 2d mostly… But still, delicious and creative.
Ideal Amaze 'N' Marbles 60 Piece Classic Wood Construction Set
Recommended for children 5 years or older, or adults that are stuck in a desk job that doesn’t allow them to be as creative as they want to be. Nothing helps balance out the monotony of PowerPoint like creating a complex maze with your mind, and wooden blocks. And for just $26 and 2 day shipping, how can you go wrong?
It doesn’t matter if you’re an Apple fanboy, like to be different with your Galaxy or still have a flip phone (I can’t back that last part up). This Anker PowerCore will quickly recharge your phone on those long trips, during meetings or when the outlet is just too far to walk to. Makes a great stocking stuffer!
ARK: Survival Evolved
It is unlikely that you’ll ever make it through one of our Unprofessional Holiday lists without a video game making the cut. ARK: Survival Evolved gives you everything an engineer could want! The ability to craft nearly anything imaginable (think Minecraft), skills to tame and ride dinosaurs and best of all, all the fun of going outside without leaving your couch. Crack open a beer, throw on your PJs and tune out the kids for a bit this holiday season! Available on Xbox One, PS4 and Steam!
BoXZY Three-In-One 3D Printer, CNC Mill and Laser Engraver
Is this just a shameless plug for our friends at BoXZY? Yes. Is it likely the best suggestion on this list for a true engineer? Absolutely! Last year we suggested you get that special engineer in your life a 3D printer, but why stop there?!? BoXZY offers a 3-in-1 3D printer, desktop CNC mill and laser engraver so you’ll never have to leave the office to make anything you can think of (at small enough dimensions). If you’re thinking about any of these tools for your home, you better seriously consider this as a top contender!
This 1,969 part piece of history will bring a bit of NASA to your home! Inspire young minds to get into the sciences or help the older engineers remember their childhood. Or if you’re my age, you probably don’t care about space travel all that much because it is old news, but traveling to Mars sure is cool! At $195, the Saturn V might seem a bit expensive, but at least I didn’t add the Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon like I originally wanted!
I can still remember getting my first Nerf gun for Christmas. I’m sure my parents regretted it from the first shot I took at my brother, resulting in what we will call a physical confrontation. Times have changed, and the advanced technology of the Nerf N-Strike Elite TeerraScout means you can now send a robot to do your dirty work, postponing any brotherly quarrels for at least a little longer.
Outsmarting your competition, no need to socialize with people outside your nerdy inner circle, and colonizing Mars. What more could an engineer ask for?? The answer would be nothing!! Rated as one of the top board games of 2017 by boardgamegeek.com, Terraforming Mars is sure to be a hit, and if you’re lucky, even get your Elven Ranger to give up a little bit of Dungeons & Dragons time…
Engineering can be stressful. Nothing helps you unwind and kick off the pocket protector like a nice cold beer straight from your UKEG mini keg! Fill that puppy up with some delicious Straub beer and enjoy the overly complex, yet beautiful design until the 64 ounces are gone.
